This is us “Behind The Scenes”

I thought it would be a bit of fun to share some of our Behind The Scenes shots.
It proved to me that we do need to make more of an effort to take more like these.

I mean really?? I couldn’t be happier – shooting at sunset on a beautiful island in the warm Indian Ocean. Bliss!

Jewish Wedding at Princes Road Synagogue

Ben and Victoria’s wedding is the third time we have had the pleasure of shooting a Jewish wedding.
I am just astounded at the traditions, ceremony and general upbeat nature of these weddings.
There is so much joy and fun being spread around and so many a fantastic opportunities for getting amazing Photojournalistic images!

I wanted to share the lovely email that we got from Victoria:
“Thank you so much for sending us the link to the photos, and for getting them done so quickly. It was so great to come home from honeymoon to your email….and your stunning photographs. You totally captured the mood of the day and we are thrilled with them. Our parents are really pleased with them too, and one of my friends commented that she wants to get married again so she can have you to take her photos!”

Victoria and Ben also went to Zanzibar for their honeymoon and I have been reminiscing about ours which was even at the same hotel!
Ben is a keen photographer and came back with some great shots from the trip.

SWPP Convention in London

I have had the most fantastic time over the past week attending the annual SWPP Convention in London.
This is a huge wedding and portrait photographer convention that brings together some of the top names in the industry.
I am just bursting to the brim with ideas and cannot wait to share my top picks of the speakers I have seen in the last few days. As a taster I am going to list the best speakers, the ones who really stood out for me and gave me great useful information and ideas to go forward with our business, marketing, PR, Shooting, Style and more.

In no specific order:

Jerry Ghionis, Trevor & Faye Yerbury, Julia Boggio, Bev & Barrie Downie, Mark Seymour, Mitche Graf and Tamara Lackey

Monday is my last day at the convention where I will be attending Jerry Ghionis’s full day seminar.
I cannot wait for it as he is a fantastic speaker and a true leader in the photographic world.

Please sir, I’d like some Mauritius

“Have you seen paradise?”
is the question being asked by a billboard as we make our way through departures at Mauritius’ Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport.  After two weeks we had not only seen, but fallen in love with paradise.

Although some may enjoy the act of travel, personally we would prefer if it were eliminated altogether.  We would definitely subscribe to instantaneous travel. Teleportation must surely be the next great invention?
Once checked in the realisation of the situation manifests itself - this time yesterday I was half way around the world anticipating this exact moment. It takes a day or two to allow yourself the luxury of ridding the ‘inner city blues’ and embracing ‘island style’ living.

Jen and Dom are a beautiful young couple who are not only very dedicated to each-other, but to their friends and family as well.  Dom is part of a fortunate group of friends who have always managed to come together at various milestones in each others lives.  Dom had friends from South Africa, Australia, the UK and the USA gather to witness his commitment to Jen.  You can judge a person by the company they keep, and both Dom and Jen certainly keep very good company.

Weddings are an emotional affair as close friends and family are remembered in fitting tributes.  This wedding was certainly no different as tribute was paid by having the parents of Emmanuel, one of Dom’s closest friends, to attend as representatives of a young man who was taken too soon in life. Jenna’s father gave a poignant speech where, through the virtue of Irish story telling prowess, he illustrated a fairy tale-esque coming together of two souls when he and his wife were once younger lovers.  Keeping the family tradition of spinning a well-worked yarn, Dom accepted the invitation by immediately following on with his own speech.

Jen and Dom displayed their non conventional side by having a bottle of Tequila, which Mark had brought from The States, as their alternate Wedding Cake.  It’s nice to keep with traditions and customs, even if they are tailored to suit your own personalities.  This is especially true when the guests are involved, which is exactly what transpired as guests formed a somewhat orderly queue and took it in turns to accept their shots of Tequila which were duly downed. With a cake like that it was little wonder the wedding ascended into joviality.  With friends and family together from all four corners of the globe, it was great to witness a celebration as if they had never been apart.  Chanelle and I were certainly privileged to be able to be a part of such a joyous occasion in the most idyllic location. – Craig

• The bride wore a David Fielden gown bought from Teokath in Wimbledon, London.
• Jen, the bride, designed the wedding herself – bringing most of it over from the UK.

Dena and Mark’s Next Day Creative Shoot

After shooting Dena & Mark’s wedding up at the Hendon Hall Hotel in North London we spent the night at the hotel, had breakfast and all jumped in a cab to Westminster. The next day shoot gave us a chance to have some fun and do creative shots with them.

Jewish weddings tend to be late in the afternoon on a Sunday and being November this meant that it was dark by 4:30pm when the ceremony at the Synagogue had ended. Doing a Next Day Shoot allows time where couple’s aren’t worried about getting back to guests and the stresses of the big day are behind all of us. Thanks to Dena & Mark for letting us be a part of your wedding and for convincing your parents that it was ok to hire wedding photographers who would be shooting their first Jewish Wedding!

Merry Chrismas & Happy New year

What happened to this year?

I mean, it has literally flown by. Things have moved so fast I just can’t believe it.

We have been so busy and are so thankful for that. Shooting weddings that have taken us abroad to places like South Africa (our old home), Prague and our firm favourite – Mauritius (so much so that I keep scouring properties out there!). I still do a fair amount of freelance retouching and have had a hectic schedule doing this during November and December at Mario Testino’s retouching studio in London.

The New Year shows no sign of let up either! We are off to Liverpool to shoot a big Jewish Wedding, an intimate wedding in Windsor and finally a local wedding to be held at Wotton House in Dorking, Surrey – where we live. And that just takes us to the end of January!

Christmas for us is a time spent with close friends.
Being away from “home” for so long we don’t have the luxury of celebrating with our family.
Usually we set up webcam conversations on Skype or have lengthy telephone calls with our nearest and dearest in in South Africa.
This is the first year that I don’t get to do that with my Dad. A lot of you who are friends with me on Facebook will already know, but I lost my father very suddenly to a heart attack in January this year. He was only 54. I have included a few family snaps at the end of this post in memory of him. I think of him every single day – even more so during the festive season. My step-mother is now fighting cancer and our thoughts and love are with her too. I can’t wait to see all of our friends and family in South Africa when we spend a whole month there in March / April.

The Black Christmas Tree
Two years ago I saw a black Christmas Tree with silver decorations in the window of a quirky furniture shop in Dorking.
I loved it. I had to have it.
They where kind enough to let me know where they bought it and off I went in search of my black Christmas Tree.
Black, Red and Gold…
