Wedding at Tala Game Reserve {Part 2}

Time was also set aside for a game drive with the Groomsmen and Bridesmaids. Wendy was particularly keen to include a giraffe in one or two of her shots. A rhino would also suffice. We did come across some rhino before too long. Unfortunately there was a calf amongst them. Approaching the rhino it became apparent that beneath a seemingly armour-plated exterior was contained a mass of pure muscle. This did not go unnoticed by our bride, and the addition of a calf being cautiously protected by its apparent indestructible parents ensured a cautious approach and hasty retreat. Continuing our search we did manage to find a lone giraffe in the thick growth of the Kwa-Zulu Natal escarpment. It was at about this time that the brakes on the game ranger’s Land Rover decided to take on the physical attributes of the common sponge. Realising that group safety would now be compromised, it was decided to cut the game drive short and slowly meander back to join the rest of the guests.

There certainly is a different approach to take when covering a wedding for close friends. Although we’ve been tasked with capturing the highlights of the day, the wedding couple are also determined that everyone enjoy the celebration with them. It would be all too easy to lose perspective and join in the festivities with scant regard for the intended purpose. It takes a certain amount of restraint to ensure that focus is concentrated solely on capturing the special event. Personally knowing a couple also eliminates the requirement of gauging ones subject. Knowing Greg and Wendy, we knew that their guests would be up for celebrating with great vigour. And they certainly did not disappoint. It’s always great to see perfect strangers coming together to contribute towards a common celebration. I fondly remember a wedding littered with smiling faces and laughs being carried away into the clear African skies. There was however a very sombre moment when Wendy dedicated an amply poignant speech to her mother who had sadly lost her battle with cancer a while back. It was such a fitting tribute that only the most non emotive of people would have been surprised to find a knot building up in their throat. From where I was standing there was not a dry eye to be found. I’m confident from the days proceedings that a blessing would have been given from above from a proud mother wishing her daughter all the happiness she so rightly deserves.
