Wedding at Gatestreet Barn in Surrey

How did you feel when you found out
you’d won this round of the Wedding of
the Year competition?
Surprised and excited! We never imagined
that our wedding would end up in the final.
Your colour scheme and theme was
vintage with green, cream and muted
purple colours.

How did you incorporate
this into your wedding day?
The pistachio green bridesmaid dresses were
used as a reference point and we colour-
matched the invitations and ushers’ ties. I am
quite creative, so I decided to make the table
plan using a picture frame I bought from an
antique shop in Clapham, London. We put
the wedding menu in art deco frames on
each table, surrounded by antique candelabra
and votives.
Our bridesmaids carried amnesia roses
which have beautiful muted purple
petals, and our florist designed the table
centrepieces, so they were in-keeping with
the country barn feel.

What was the trickiest element to
arrange?
Keeping the guest list within the capacity
limit of the venue was difficult, especially
given the size of Niall’s immediate and
extended family back in Ireland. We also
took a long time to decide on the hymns
and readings for the order of service, but the
Deacon at Chilworth Friary gave us a huge
amount of support and help.
Despite a detailed running order, which
Niall had spent hours drafting, we still
underestimated the importance of timing
and not surprisingly things did slip a little.
But everyone was having such a good time,
nobody noticed.

Were your suppliers helpful?
It amazed us just how much time our
suppliers dedicated to our wedding. We
never felt under pressure to make quick
decisions or that we were just another couple
on the wedding conveyor belt. Jane and
Lisa at Gate Street Barn run such a slick
operation, which put us totally at ease on
the day.
Jen and James at Kalm Kitchen really
listened to what we wanted and helped us
to create a classy and delicious wedding
breakfast menu that still, to this day, our
friends comment on.
And our photographers, Chanelle and
Craig, really know how to capture the spirit
and emotion of a wedding on camera. Every
picture tells a thousand words and they
were really keen to meet us at the venues
a month before the wedding, so we could
decide on locations for the formal pictures
and creative shots.

What was the best bit of advice you
received when planning your wedding?
To relax and enjoy it. Having a running
order that all your suppliers can follow is
really helpful, but do allow some time for
over-running, especially during the speeches.
A close friend gave us a great piece of
advice that on the day, the two of us should
take a stolen moment to be alone together, as
the day goes by in a whirl.
